Sociable. Flocks of 10-100s. Pairs form permanent bonds. Flocks congregate at water sources, often in thousands. Ground foraging in flocks on fallen seeds. Plucks ripening grass seeds from stems. Also insects. Drinks frequently.

Found in varied habitats. Dry wooded grasslands, near water.
