Usually seen in large flocks. Rarely dives or swims. Wings 'whistle' in flight. Pairs are monogamous. Shrill, high-pitched whistle call, twittering.

Found mostly after dusk on grazing grassland and wetland edges or dabbles on water surface. Often flies long distances at night to feed. Communal, daytime roosting camps on wetland banks.
