Ground forager on seeds, herbacious plants and berries. Distinctive, metallic 'buzzing' alarm call. Soft warbling when feeding.

Prefers coastal areas. Found in damp grasslands, tidal flats, sedge swamps, coastal dunes. In the breeding season favours forests with Smithton Peppermints.
