Commonly seen grazing grasslands on offshore islands and the adjacent mainland. Noted for belligerent defence of the nest. Flight is strong with rapid wingbeats and gliding. Pairs form a permanent bond.

Found on offshore islands with tussock grass, heathlands, swamp edges and pasture.
