Mostly runs or walks with tail cocked. Sometimes flies long distances, in large numbers, to wetland feeding grounds. Usually seen in loose flocks of 5-50 birds. Usually silent. Sharp 'kak' repeated alarm call.

Found along the margins of swamps, lakes, irrigated pasture, rivers and inland claypans.
